Earlier this year, I read (and LOVED!) Everything but the Truth, the debut novel by Gillian McAllister. I was more than thrilled to find out that McAllister’s sophomore novel, Anything You Do Say, would be publishing in early 2018. That being said, I am thrilled to welcome you to my stop on the blog tour for Anything You Do Say by Gillian McAllister.
McAllister breathes new life into the psychological thriller genre by adding in a thick layer of morality and human emotion. This novel was extremely through provoking. It opens with Joanna, out at a bar, with her friends. After being accosted, Joanna and her girlfriends leave the bar and Joanna heads home. She hears footsteps. She is being followed. It has to be the man from the bar. She turns around. Pushes the threat. He falls and tumbles down a flight of stairs. He does not get up. Now, Joanna is faced with a decision. Fight or flight.
The events take place and then, immediately, McAllister goes off into two different directions as each chapter is labelled “conceal” and “reveal”. Initially, I was a little bit confused, but then, as I realized that McAllister was taking her readers down the two possible paths that Joanna could be taking, I was struck by the brilliance of this concept. Which one is the truth? Is she doing anything at all? Is it all in her mind?
This one had me thinking constantly during my reading and gave me sort of a “choose your own adventure” vibe, which I loved!
I mentioned that Anything You Do Say kept me thinking. It had me thinking about what she is going to do, thinking about what I would do in that situation and thinking about the implications of both actions. McAllister’s greatest strength (in both this book and in her prior publication) is her ability to have the reader in a scenario that is both eerily realistic and the stuff of human nightmares. One of my greatest fears would be being captured in a momentary, impulsive situation that could push my life into a completely different direction. These are the types of story that McAllister brings to her pages.
Bringing into question the morals and beliefs of both her characters AND her readers, this page-turner will have you reading late into the night. Absolutely brilliant.
