Top Ten Tuesday an original feature that was created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Essentially, for each week the list is a new topic and the feature is designed to share lists with other bookish folks! I love reading these posts and it’s a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers, so I’m taking it on!!
This week, the list is surrounding my top book turn offs; things that make me instantly NOT want to read a book.
Keep reading to see what made my top ten!
Number 1: Cowboys/Western Themes
Any novel that has a cowboy on the cover, a cowboy protagonist or anything “western” will have me participating in some serious book avoidance. I have no interest.
Number 2: Romance Novels with Naked Men on the Cover
I love me a romance novel, but come on, put some clothes on. I just don’t get it.
Number 3: Sport Books
Boring. Boring. Boring.
Anything with a heavy sports theme will not keep my interest.
Number 4: Any Book That Has An Obvious Y.A Look To It
I don’t read a lot of Young Adult fiction; it’s not that I don’t like it, but I certainly don’t relate to it. So, if a book looks too Y.A, I won’t even give the plot a chance. I just assume that I will not be a fan.
Number 5: Books That Have A Movie Adaptation Cover
I just get really upset when a book has a movie adaptation; I don’t feel like it is often that a book to film adaptation is done right! I’m not saying this will put me off of reading the book entirely, but it will definitely put me off from reading that copy!
Number 6: Historical Fiction
I generally do not read historical fiction. Once I read it, I usually enjoy it, but it isn’t something that I pick out for myself. Unless it is a WWII novel or something set in the Holocaust, I do enjoy those.
Number 7: Fantasy
Again, another genre I wouldn’t usually pick up for myself.
Number 8: If There Is Lots of Hype
Now I know this was also on my list last week for the reasons why I would pick up a book but this one goes two fold for me; if a novel has lots of hype, it will absolutely make me want to read it but it is on my terms. During the time of the hype, I refuse to read it and then, I end up reading it later.
Number 9: Classics
I know, I know. I’m a horrible person. I teach classics at school, I read classics throughout my time in university and I just don’t want to read them in my spare time.
Number 10: If The Book Is In A Large Series
I have wanted to pick up some J.D Robb books and some of those Stephanie Evanovich books but I cannot commit to that many! Some of these books are 23 novels in, I don’t feel like I could ever catch up and I don’t want to read them out of order.
#bookwormproblems at their finest.
Well, there ya have it, some of my book turn offs!
Any similarites? What book turn offs do you have?
Agree with your points 2, 3, 4, 5, and 9! Clearly we have pretty same-ish interests when it comes to books! 😛

Oh I totally agree with you on the naked men thing. And the cowboy thing! So off putting.

It is so strange to me!

I would likely have the exact same turnoffs! The naked men covers make my skin crawl and there are far too many ‘carbon copy’ naked covers these days.

I just don’t understand what the point is with them! So random lol

Soooo many of these are the same for me! #1. 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10 for sure! I also hate movie covers. Like, WHY.

A couple of these made our list this week, too! And quite a few of the rest that didn’t, definitely could have!
My TTT.

I always used to think I didn’t like historical fiction. Then I realised it was anything older than the twentieth century. Anything with a queen, King or knave puts me right off.

It really all becomes situational; I never pick them out on my own but whenever I am given one to read, I usually end up enjoying it. I think it also depends on the author! It has to be done right.

This is most displeasing that fantasy is in the list, it’s the second list I’ve seen it in today, sigh, some people!😂
Respect for mentioning Y-A though as most people love that stuff. And yes, there is nothing worse than a naked dude on the cover of a book showing off his glistening oiled granite abs, barf!🤢🤢🤢

Bahaha I just said I was not particularly drawn to fantasy! You recommend a fantasy book Drew and I will give it a try!! lol

HA! so nice to see I wasn’t the only one turned off by the six-packs on the cover. I mentioned that in my last post. agree with most of the above 10, except historical fiction (ouch–the genre I published for my grandfather). still, I’ve read a couple WWII books lately that i’m pretty sure you’d really like. gee, it’s so nice to know others feel the same way about YA. now–where was the mention of the zombie, vampires, and dystopian? maybe I am too old!

Agree with so many of these! And when I started blogging it felt like I was the only blogger who didn’t love YA fiction. I soon realised i was wrong, but for some reason I initially only seemed to encounter YA-obsessed bloggers. I’ve read a few good YA books in the past, I must admit, but even growing up I got bored of YA books pretty early on – early teenager- and preferred everything about adult fiction 😊 Fab post x!

There have been a few I enjoy too but for the most part, I just cannot get into them!

Totally agree with tons of these especially the covers with naked men, I just can’t take those books seriously!

So much #5. Good adaptations seem so rare, and I hate it too when I like a book cover and then the movie comes out and they change the cover. Usually not for the better. 🙂
I’m not a super big fan of reading the classics for fun either…

It is one of my biggest book pet peeves!! I feel like books should be timeless and now have a random actor on the cover!! I wish I did like to read classics for fun, but I want to escape when I read not spend the time mentally translating lol

Agree with these except for no 6. I love historical fiction as a change from crime. As for no. 2 – these covers are a definite turn off. A good looking man fully dressed will do for me!

I agree!! I don’t mind the men on the cover but can we put on a well-pressed suit or something?!! lol

I HATE movie adaption covers, they’re my worst nightmare. I just went out to get Big Little Lies and all they had was the tv show cover and I was so so upset. They’re never as good as the original so I don’t know why they change it. Also the naked men and cowboy thing is super relatable 😂people on the covers of books in general normally throw me off.
Also: I’m running the book blogger awards, and so if you’re interested in sharing the book blogger love you have until the end of April to post your nominations: https://writethroughthenight.wordpress.com/2017/04/05/the-book-blogger-awards/

Ha! Totally agree with a book in a large series! I know this is kind of silly but a lot of classics and Nora Roberts books have been reprinted. I will only buy the reprinted version. Not the old ones that are mass market paperback. Just absolutely no to mass market paperback! Yak! 🙈

Oh yeah!! TOTALLY AGREE! Why are the books so small??!! They are like books for Polly Pockets lol
