#cjsreads decided to get into the Valentine’s Day spirit and read a romantic suspense novel for our next February read. We decided to read Every Dark Corner by Karen Rose.
Keep reading below for a synopsis of the book and our thoughts.
Synopsis from Goodreads
Every Dark Corner is the nail-biting new thriller from Sunday Times bestseller Karen Rose, and Book 3 in the Cincinnati series, following on from Closer Than You Think and Alone in the Dark.
When FBI Special Agent Griffin “Decker” Davenport wakes from his coma, he is desperate to find the missing children he knows are in danger. At the end of his last investigation, when he thought it was all over and justice had been served, he discovered that not everyone had been rescued, but he was shot before he was able to tell anyone.
Special Agent Kate Coppola has recently moved to Cincinnati. She says she’s chasing a promotion but she’s actually running away from heartache. She’s found the recordings from Decker’s time undercover and has been at his side in the hospital while she tries to put together the pieces of the crime he was investigating—and what connection it has to his own mysterious past.
When someone tries to kill Decker in his hospital bed, he and Kate realise that the children are not the only ones whose lives are threatened, and that they must stop at nothing to hunt down the perpetrators. And danger is waiting in every dark corner.
WHAT CHANDRA THOUGHT
After spending three years undercover in a sex trafficking operation, he wakes up from a coma desperate to get back to work to find children he knows are missing. Special Agent Kate Coppola is running from her own demons and ends up in Cincinnati and by Decker’s side. She’s determined to help him find out who is running this operation and put an end to it all. When people around them start getting hurt or killed and an attempt on Decker’s life is made at the hospital, they realize these people will do nothing to stop from being caught. While dealing with their inner turmoil, their intense attraction to each other and the balance of keeping it all together in order to help one well known child porn “star”, Sunshine Suzie, whose name happens to pop up in a chance occurrence – they find out more than they ever wanted to know about the operation at hand and who is involved. When will it ever end and how many lives will it cost them?
Admittedly, this book took about 30-40% before it snared me. Maybe because of the density of being 700+ pages, it seemed daunting. While you can read this as a stand alone and still enjoy it, I do think reading the first two books will help to get some backstory on some of the characters. Once I was snared though, I breezed through the rest of the book. I love a strong, snarky, female lead character and Coppola certainly is one of those. There were quite a few characters introduced and I felt for the victims, those involved that had personal histories that made them sensitive to the situation. The author does well in bringing all of these to the surface. And the romance? Steamy! 😉 If you like romantic suspense, you will definitely enjoy this book – it’s worth the long read.
I really enjoyed this thriller! The main reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it’s book 3 of the Cincinnati books and I wasn’t familiar with some of the main characters. It works well as a standalone, but I missed a good chunk of the character development from the first two books.
This book is about FBI Agent Griffin “Decker” Davenport and when he wakes up from his coma and is desperate to find the missing children. At the end of his last investigation, when he thought it was all over and justice had been served, he discovered that not everyone had been rescued, but he was shot before he was able to tell anyone.
We also follow Special Agent Kate Coppola, who recently moved to Cincinnati for a promotion. She, however, is trying to help solve Decker’s last case. When someone tries to kill Decker in his hospital bed, he and Kate realize that the children are not the only ones whose lives are threatened and that they must stop at nothing to hunt down the perpetrators. And the danger is waiting in every dark corner.
I enjoyed all the suspense and twists throughout this novel. Like I mentioned earlier, I wish I had read the first two (which I’ll soon do!). I also couldn’t believe how long the book was (600+ pages) but I didn’t lose interest throughout (as can happen with longer books).

FBI Agent Griffin Davenport who awakens from a coma and is desperately in need to find the missing children he discovered to be in danger. With the help of Special Agent Kate Coppola, Davenport begins to explain the case and his findings. However, when someone tries to kill Davenport in his hospital bed, he begins to realize that maybe the children are not the only ones whose lives are in danger. In fact, it appears that danger may be lurking in every dark corner….
Every Dark Corner, the third installment in the Cincinnati series, opens right in the midst of the action. Davenport is just waking up from his coma, characters are in complete disarray and some children, seemingly involved in some sort of sex ring, are in danger. I was hooked right away. Having not read the other two novels in the story, I was worried I would not be able to follow. Unfortunately, my fears were correct. I was about 30% in this novel, still feeling disconnected and unable to follow the story. In my opinion, it was imperative to read the other two novels in this series first before trying to read Every Dark Corner.
This novel is very well written and I am more than intrigued to find out more about this series; I will be going back to purchase the other two books and read this one in the correct way!
I’ll get back to you on my rating.
