Book Review: The Gift (Louise Jensen)

Screen Shot 2016-12-12 at 6.22.34 AM.pngAfter Jenna falls seriously ill, medical professionals figure she is running out of time; she then receives the greatest gift of all- a heart transplant that grants her a second chance.   As Jenna works through recovery, she begins to have strange dreams. At first, she believes them to be side effects of her medication or secondary trauma, but then she starts feeling like maybe they are something more. Jenna becomes obsessed with learning about her heart donor. Where did come from? How did they die? To Jenna, everyone else knows the answers but no one will talk. As she delves deeper and deeper, searching for the truth, it soon becomes clear that the truth may end up costing her everything: her loved ones, her sanity and maybe even her life….

The Gift, by Louise Jensen, is a completely different type of thriller. This one focuses on the idea of cellular memory.  This is the concept coined by medical professionals that state some patients, after organ donation, can take on traits of the person they have received the organs from.  I am fascinated by this theory; this novel is able to incorporate this phenomenon into a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

The novel opens with Jenna, struggling to cope after she has received her heart transplant. Someone died so she could live.   When she begins having vivid dreams at night, she shrugs it off but when she starts craving food she never liked before and feeling the urge to style her hair differently, she begins to seek out and contact the family of her donor and find out about the woman who now holds a place inside her.  Once she begins looking, Jenna finds herself suffering from extreme paranoia and feels like she is in grave danger; or is her paranoia real?

This one had so many red herrings and I was consistently thrown off! My paranoia was matching Jenna’s as she struggles and searches for answers. With twists and turns filling every inch of this book, Jensen weaves an intricate plot that will leave you not wanting to spend any time away from this book!   This one has it all!  Blackmail, family secrets, lies, deception…if you are looking for a book to keep you on the edge of your seat, then you have found your match!

If you want a completely original psychological thriller, then I would recommend you pre-order this book! It goes on sale December 16, 2016!

I voluntarily received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book from Bookouture Publishing, Louise Jensen and Netgalley.

  1. Finished this one on the weekend, I liked it, but not the ending. I don’t know why, I guess I expected something bigger. I think I’m on the minority that prefers The Sister haha

  2. A thriller that employs the concept of cellular memory…my mom would always creep me out whenever I’s mark donate organs on my state ID application saying things like “do you want someone else to have your memories & see what you’ve seen?!?!” she’s so old school smh *hides face* LOL! I’m intrigued by this author after reading rave reviews for The Sister, added both to my TBR. Great review 😉
