So excited to be on the blog tour today for Rachel Amphlett’s Scared to Death! I’ll be sharing my review for this book today and (spoiler alert!) I LOVED this book!
When Detective Kay Hunter is called to an abandoned building to investigate the discovery of the body of a teenaged girl, they figure it was a kidnapping gone wrong. However, Detective Kay is not convinced, especially when a man is found dead and a second girl is taken. Soon, Detective Kay finds herself in a race against time before this vicious killer claims another life….
Scared to Death is a fast-paced, crime thriller by Rachel Amphlett. This police procedural is the first in a series starring Detective Kay Hunter and thank goodness there will be more because I LOVED this book. It was dark, fast paced and an “on the edge of your seat” type of read.
This book starts out with a bang-smack dab in the middle of the action; a couple is frantically in search of their daughter who had been kidnapped. After the ransom money is dropped off, they are shocked to find out their daughter is dead. Enter Detective Kay Hunter, struggling with her own demons and desperate for redemption. The novel follows her as she wittingly hunts down the killer and strives to bring justice.
I loved the character of Detective Kay; she is strong, intelligent and can hold her own in the male-dominated world of policing. I especially loved how we got to see her personal life at home; this is so rare in a police procedural. Seeing her as a person, instead of just a cop, helped me to connect with her.
Aside from getting into the personal life of our protagonist, this novel has some features that were unconventional for a typical police procedural. In this novel, we get to know who the murderer is right away and what a treat that is! I loved hearing bits from his perspective, but do not be fooled, just because we get a glimpse into the killer’s mind doesn’t mean that Amphlett doesn’t provide ample twist, turns, and red herrings to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I would absolutely recommend this read to anyone who enjoys police procedurals, or just a really well-written crime thriller. I know I’ll be waiting for the next in the series!
